Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has sought funds under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), for the construction of retaining walls, in areas that are prone to landslides in the city.
Mayor Premanand Shetty told reporters on Friday that normally under the SDRF and NDRF, funds are released for the repair of roads and houses, and that there was no provision for the utilization of funds for the construction of retaining walls. Elected representatives had recently urged chief minister Basavaraj Bommai to consider it as a special case, and announce a special package for Mangaluru, in order to construct retaining walls under the SDRF and NDRF, he said.
“The CM has responded positively to the demand. MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar has sent a proposal to the state government, through the district administration. As many as 32 houses have been damaged in the MCC limits due to rain. Further, about 15 km of roads have been damaged due to rain,” he said.
On the recent mudslide reported at Ballurugudde in Kannur ward of the city, the mayor said that sandbags have been placed to prevent landslides at the site. Tarpaulins have been placed, to ensure that rainwater does not cause a mudslide again in the area, he added.
