west 8 completes the landscaping for renzo piano’s eighty seven park

Working with the Renzo Piano Making Workshop, West 8 completed the landscaping for ’87 Park ‘- a residential tower in Miami Beach. Inspired by the exceptional setting of the site and the native and subtropical ecology of South Florida, the private and public, natural and man-made, indoor and outdoor spaces are seamlessly merged into a series of gardens and landscapes. The project includes a lush 14 acre public park to the south and a 0.8 acre garden to the north.

The 87 Park is a bookend on the last lot and is on the edge of town where the park meets the ocean. The project hovers over a tropical nature park that was once filled with former mansions on the Atlantic Way and creates a new dialogue with the vibrant North Beach community. Careful maintenance and enhancement of the coast’s natural dune system and urban conditions have harnessed and balanced the best features of the site, creating an urban Eden unparalleled in South Florida.

As a community benefit, the program offers unobstructed ocean views from Collins Avenue, aided by the sinking of the underground parking garage. Two public links provide access to the coast and the south beach, the south of which offers additional width and comfort through a series of benches and shady native plants. In the two-acre private oasis on the north side of the property, two elegant water channels and a series of minimalist footpaths lead the viewer from urban Biscayne Bay into the Atlantic.

The Miami Beach experience has been brought to the building’s lobby, which hovers over a reflective pool of water and overlooks the ocean from the pool deck. In addition, the design, inspired by the legacy of Miami Beach and Art Basel, includes the careful curation and positioning of world-class artwork in the landscape.

Guided by the coastal spectrum of plant species, the team curated breathtaking, native and expressive plants on the coast and in the highlands. Starting from the restored dunes, clusters of wind-bent coconut palms give way to a grove of dancing sea grapes that have been specially pruned to highlight the different silhouettes of each tree. Further in the highlands, a collection of gumbo limbos, with their unique red bark color and scaly texture, form the heart of the garden, creating a transition zone between native coastal species and subtropical highland plantings. The planting in the entrance area is protected from salt spray and hurricane winds by the topography of the building and the shape of the building and consists of the most tropical species.
