A New Jersey man is accused of beating his mother unconscious with a landscaping rock.

On Monday, Evesham Police responded to a home on Woodlake Drive in Marlton, New Jersey, for a reported assault. When they arrived they found an unconscious 75-year-old woman suffering from severe head injuries.

The woman was taken to Cooper University Hospital where she was placed in critical but stable condition. She remains unconscious at the hospital.

Investigators determined the woman had been beaten with a landscaping rock and identified her son, 43-year-old Lawrence Kim, of Marlton, New Jersey, as her attacker.

“Initially we didn’t know where he was. The witness last saw him on foot. So we were checking the area to see if we could locate a suspect,” Evesham Police Chief Walter Miller said. “Through the investigation we determined that there was potentially a vehicle that could’ve been accessible to him that was missing. So we investigated that end which ultimately led us to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.”

Police found and arrested Kim in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is awaiting extradition back to New Jersey and is currently being held in Pennsylvania on $25,000 bail.

Police still haven’t determined a motive behind the attack and hope to interview the woman when she regains consciousness.

“But if anybody’s living in a situation that they’re fearful of violence or fearful of the potential of violence in their home, I would ask them to come in,” Chief Miller said. “We have resources available here through restraining orders. Through protection orders that will protect the victim.”

While Kim is in custody, the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the incident should call Evesham Police at 856-983-1116.

Three Villagers in a villa community have been ordered to remove rock landscaping.

The Community Development District 3 Board of Supervisors held three separate public hearings Friday on the illicit rock landscaping in the Alexandria Villas in the Village of Belle Aire.

The properties are located on Roanoke Street and all three were found in violation due to complaints lodged with Community Standards.

The Architectural Review Manual states that homeowners cannot replace sod with rock at patio villas. Rock can only be used as an accent.

The violations prompted a lengthy discussion about whether rock should be acceptable. Supervisors viewed photos of the violations during the public hearings held at Savannah Center.

“I don’t find this objectionable. I don’t find it offensive or inappropriate. But it’s a violation of the rule. Maybe we need to revisit the rule,” said Supervisor Gail Lazenby.

3588 Roanoke St.
3512 Roanoke St.3512 Roanoke St.
3476 Roanoke St.3476 Roanoke St.

This particular rule has been a point of contention elsewhere in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. Earlier this year, a homeowner in the Oviedo Villas in the Village of St. Charles bitterly protested a decision by the Community Development District 8 Board of Supervisors ordering the removal of rock landscaping.

Deputy District Manager Carrie Duckett and District Counsel Mark Brionez cautioned against a change in the rule.

Duckett explained that professional engineers have offered an opinion that rock landscaping in patio villas could pose a danger to property. Without sod to help soak up heavy rain, the runoff from the rock could overwhelm the storm water drainage system and cause flooding. Villa roads drain down to the center unlike regular roads which crown in the center and drain to either side.

Brionez warned that changing the rule would have a much broader impact on past deed compliance cases. Homeowners who went to the expense of removing rock and putting down sod after they were found in violation, might try to take action against CDD 3.

At least for the moment, the rule stands in CDD 3.

Do you think the rule against rock in landscaping beds should remain in place in The Villages? Share your thoughts in a letter to the Editor at [email protected]

Fairfax County, Virginia Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on the night of November 9, 2022, in a neighborhood in Oakton, VA, that, according to neighbors, “tends to be calm and quiet”.

While the incident is still under investigation and details are scarce, police reported that there was a confrontation between the homeowner and an intruder outside the home. The police ascertained that the homeowner had witnessed the trespasser on his property and had asked him to leave. The trespasser-turned-assailant attacked the homeowner with a stick, and when the homeowner made a break for the house, the attacker knocked him to the ground.

Upon making it back into the home, where the homeowner’s wife, two kids, and an unnamed adult were also residing, the homeowner was able to fetch his firearm. The assailant entered the home as well, with what the police categorized as a “large landscaping rock.”

It is reported that the assailant was shot and killed before 911 was called. Despite attempts to revive, the assailant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Given that 911 was not called until after the threat had been stopped, it is likely that no one inside the home was aware of the events taking place outside the home. Had the intruder successfully neutralized the homeowner, the inhabitants could have been taken by surprise should the criminal have entered the home. This is another incident that makes the case for more frequent carry, even at home, where we feel the safest.

Todd Griffin started his Veteran Lawn Care & Landscaping business after serving in the US Army where he was deployed overseas in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Griffin started the business in 2014. He said he always had a passion for landscaping with almost 20 years of experience prior and after retiring from the military.

“It really is a passion of mine; i love it; I really love the design aspect, as much as the install aspect and meeting with the customer,” Griffin said.

Veteran Lawn Care & Landscaping offers residential and commercial landscaping services, some of which include lawn care maintenance, landscaping and design, and sod installation, which is the process of putting in a patch of grown grass to maintain a healthy lawn.

Griffin said he prides himself on integrity when meeting with customers.

“We’re going to quote you right; we’re going to quote you competitively; we’re going to install properly; and you know, it’s a long-lasting relationship,” Griffin said.

Griffin said he enjoys the work he does at every step in the process when working on jobs.

“From the beginning to the end, from the ideas to the installation and seeing it at the completion is very satisfying, and one of the [reasons] why I continue to do what I do is I’m very passionate about what I do,” Griffin said.

Griffin, who is from Killeen and moved to Hutto in 2008, said he opened Veteran Lawn Care & Landscaping with the idea of bringing the values he learned in the military to the community.

“I want you to have a piece of commercial property or residential property and have a peace of mind when doing business with me,” Griffin said. “I’m bringing those same values from the military and implementing them in our community.”

Griffin said his favorite type of landscaping is doing work for outdoor living areas such as patios.

“My favorite is stonework for outdoor living, from textures and contrast with natural stone and concrete, that full outdoor living package is my favorite,” Griffin said.

Lawn care tips

US Army veteran Todd Griffin operates his own landscaping business and offers residents tips for maintaining their lawns during the fall and winter seasons:

1. Apply a pre-emergent to prevent weeds from sprouting up in the grass.

2. Lay down mulch to help insulate lawns and plants.

3. Pressure-wash patios and stones to prevent mold and mildew buildup.

A man was shot and killed in Oakton last night following an apparent fight with a homeowner that led the latter to retrieve a gun, police say.

The Fairfax County Police Department is currently investigating the fatal shooting at the 11400 block of Waples Mill Road as a self-defense case, Second Lt. James Curry told media yesterday. Preliminarily, there’s no indication that the two men involved in the incident knew each other, he said.

Officers were called to a reported shooting in the relatively secluded residential neighborhood just after 6 pm

Based on an initial investigation, police believe the homeowner was outside on his property when the man approached and they got into an altercation that became physical, leading the resident to retreat into his house.

“He retrieved a firearm from inside the home, and at some point, the man made entry into the home with an object that appears to be a large landscaping rock,” Curry said. “The homeowner then fired and shot the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The homeowner was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that appeared to have come from the assault, though exactly where the assault occurred and whether the rock was used as a weapon is still under investigation.

His wife and two children were in the house at the time of the shooting, along with another adult who’s unrelated but also a resident of that home, according to the police. They weren’t injured.

Curry said police had received a call for service earlier in the day when “a man was seen in the area,” but the responding officers didn’t find the man.

As of 8:30 pm yesterday, police were still working to identify the man who was killed and determine the details of the circumstances that led to the shooting, including why he was in the neighborhood and whether he entered the home by force or through an unlocked door.

“As we can interview more folks, review the surveillance footage, we can get a better understanding of what happened outside, but there was an assault that occurred outside on the property that led the homeowner to retreat back into the home that led to our fatal shooting here,” Curry said.

WELCOME HOME! “This design has a lot of different plant varieties that will bloom at different times. When designing, we like to use a lot of different textures and color,” explains Chris DeMato, owner of Rock Bottom Landscaping & Fencing. Shown here is a recent Rock Bottom project, creating an eye-appealing design of contrast and color. “We included texture such as dwarf evergreens to contrast with the soft growth of ornamental grasses, which adds subtlety, and we also featured boulders which contributed texture, giving a natural look to the overall design.”

Your home is your haven, and more and more often that extends to the surrounding landscape. Attractive plantings, handsome patios, and winding walkways all add to the pleasure of a welcoming home environment.

Chris DeMato, owner of Rock Bottom Landscaping & Fencing, knows all about transforming tired landscapes into exciting new looks. For more than 30 years, he has been helping people select just the right landscape, hardscape, or fencing to enhance their property and increase their enjoyment.

“It’s a great feeling when you can transform something that was overgrown or in disrepair, and turn it into something special,” says DeMato. “Old properties can often have overgrown plant material and that are not in good condition. We can put in new plants and trees, and it is very rewarding to see this transformation.”

Landscape design

DeMato’s experience with landscaping began at an early age, when he cut grass and helped with yard work as a boy.

“I got interested seeing the transformation that can result from good landscaping,” notes the Middlesex native. “I went to college, and studied agricultural science, and then worked for different landscape companies in the area. I got really interested in landscape design, and started my own company when I was in my twenties. I also studied landscape design at Rutgers.”

Often asked about the name of his company, “Rock Bottom,” he explains that it was appropriate on different levels, “We often did a lot of digging and removing rocks, and we also tried to offer really reasonable prices. It was just a name that seemed right.”

Headquartered in Belle Mead, the company has evolved over time, and today, it is a full scale landscaping, hardscaping, and fencing operation. It covers everything from landscape and hardscape designs to installation and maintenance, including lawn care, pruning, trimming, spring and fall cleanup, and grass cutting.

Rock Bottom handles projects of all sizes and styles, primarily residential but also some commercial, reports DeMato. Careful attention to customers’ lifestyle and expectations is a priority. Currently, plan design and hardscape design are especially in demand, he adds.

“Each customer has their own individuality and style. The main thing is that they want to enhance their property, both for their private enjoyment and also for entertainment.”

Backyards and Patios

After COVID-19 entered everyone’s lives and mindset, people were not traveling, he points out, so the home environment became even more important.

“They wanted to make their yards and properties as nice as possible,” says DeMato. “They wanted to turn their backyards and patios into an entertainment area, with fire pits, pizza ovens, and outdoor kitchens.”

This was also true for people who had moved into the area from the cities and wanted to create new landscapes and hardscapes.

Landscape lighting has become increasingly popular, adds DeMato, and this is an important part of the business. Illuminating the scene after the sun sets is a very attractive option. uplighting? downlighting? There are many possibilities for a natural lighting setting.

“It can certainly add a very nice look,” says DeMato, “and it also offers increased security. Lighting can be placed along walkways, near trees and plantings, and of course, on patios and terraces.”

styles and materials

Fencing is also important to many customers today, and this part of Rock Bottom’s business had expanded over the years.

“We added fencing in the late ’90s, and it has really grown over the years,” says DeMato. “Many customers want to keep deer away from the property or dogs from getting out. it is also a requirement if they have a swimming pool.”

A variety of styles and materials are available, and wood, metal, and vinyl, also ornamental aluminum and decorative fencing, are among the popular choices.

Patio and poolscape designs and installations keep Rock Bottom crews busy, and many options are available, from simple to sophisticated. Paver patios, brick, and natural stone are all in demand, and are often seen on walkways as well.

“Poolscapes today often have a sleeker, more modern look, with shades of gray and blue,” points out DeMato. “It’s not so much the rustic look as in the past.”

When designing a landscape, many considerations must be addressed. Sun, shade, exposure, location are all important factors, and of course, individual choice and budget are always uppermost.

‘Weather is a factor too,’ he notes. “Now we are in a drought, and this can certainly affect the plantings.”

Likes and dislikes

When he meets clients, he is eager to learn their likes and dislikes. Often, people are unsure of how to proceed, and he helps guide them into envisioning their hopes for the project.

“I try to find out what they like and don’t like,” he says. “I’ll ask questions about what they may not like about their current landscape and what they are looking forward to seeing — what colors they like, if they want flowers blooming all summer into the fall, etc.”

Other questions come up. Do they want flowering trees, such as cherry, dogwood? Bushes and shrubs, including azalea, hydrangea, rhododendron? Evergreen and shade trees?

Are durability and long-lasting plantings considerations? Do they like perennials that will bloom every year? Are they becoming interested in indigenous plants and also those that will attract bees and butterflies? These are all significant factors in determining the direction of the landscape.

At the top of the list for many customers are deer-resistant plants, and this is an ongoing challenge. There are some choices not attractive to the deer menu, but when they are very hungry, deer will eat almost anything. An assortment of deer and rabbit repellent products, including sprays, are also available.

“There are some plant varieties that can also deter insects, including mosquitoes,” adds DeMato.

Amazing Opportunities

With the advances in today’s technology, amazing opportunities are available for customers to see ”before and after” pictures of both landscapes and hardscapes.

“With computer imagery we can show customers what the new landscape or hardscape will look like,” explains DeMato. “This is a great way for them to know what they can expect.”

Depending on its size and scope, a project may take from one day to six or eight weeks or longer, he notes. “Sometimes, a ‘grand plan’ project can be spread out over time, done in increments. This can help in planning and for budget considerations.”

“We have a full-time crew of eight people on staff, and some have been with us for 17 years,” he continues. “They all have their specialties — landscaping, hardscaping, fencing. There will always be two or three guys on a specific job, and I oversee everything. I’m involved in selling, delivery, and design. I’m a hands-on guy, and I work with the clients from the beginning to ensure that we achieve their goal.”

new division

The company’s projects are primarily in Mercer, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, with many in Princeton, he adds, and he is also looking forward to completion of plans for a new division in Manasquan. “There is a big rise in the business there for us, and in fact, this is really true everywhere. It’s been amazing to see how big the industry has grown over the years.”

DeMato is proud of the business he has built, and the reputation he has established. He is especially pleased that his sons are now involved in the operation too.

“We are a company that people can count on,” he says. “We have very high standards, and our crews have extensive experience and skill. We offer personal service in a world that is constantly changing in terms of technology. Talking to someone face to face can make all the difference.

“I enjoy the interaction with people, watching the transformation taking place on their property, and then seeing the customers’ excitement when the project is finished. We often exceed their expectations. It means a lot to me that I am helping to make a difference in people’s lives by transforming their landscapes.”
