SHEPHERDSTOWN — Elmwood Cemetery recently received a donation from Betty Lowe to complete the landscaping around its Superintendent’s House.

The house was restored a few months ago, back in June 2022.

Lowe has been a board member of Elmwood Cemetery for around 30 years, and every year, she donates to the cemetery to help with different improvements throughout the year. This year, her donation was made in honor of her family, which includes her sons, John, Scott, Philip and Matthew Lowe, and daughter, Charlotte Lowe Davis.

“The donation all went to the landscaping around the restored house,” Lowe said. “They brought it back to its original state. The donation all went to landscaping in the name of my family.”

Lowe’s initial decision to become an Elmwood Cemetery board member and donor was prompted by the cemetery’s historical significance to the community and the fact that generations of her ancestors have been buried in it.

“It’s important to me,” Lowe said. “Three or four generations of my ancestors were buried there. Plus, the grounds are beautiful. I want to keep it in good condition.”

After Lowe donated the money, Orion Home and Garden did the work.

“We moved old plants and shrubs out of the way and prepared planting beds around the building,” said Orion Home and Garden owner Scott Gordon.

According to Gordon, his company planted vegetation that will grow into hedges around Elmwood Cemetery’s Superintendent’s House.

Lowe’s thoughtful donation and Orion Home and Garden’s hard work will hopefully result, overall, in a more harmonious environment than the Superintendent’s House previously produced. For the board of directors, this improved environment will hopefully encourage more people to visit Elmwood Cemetery on a regular basis.

“People are encouraged to use the grounds,” Samuel Billmyer, president of the board of directors of Elmwood Cemetery, said. “People take walks around the cemetery and use the trails to walk their dogs. It important to the community, because the cemetery has been here since the 1860s, so it has a lot of history.”

Elmwood Cemetery’s board of directors decided to restore the Superintendent’s House as a part of the cemetery’s 150th anniversary year celebrations. While the house’s restoration was finished back in June, it took until this past week for the landscaping around it to be completed.

“It was an opportunity for the Lowe family to help the cemetery,” Billmyer said. “There were a lot of rock structures and other things. The landscaping helps give the house a finished look.”

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Folliard Alumni Center at Florida Tech, already honored for its zero-energy design inside, has been recognized for its outside where native landscaping and a host of eco-friendly practices are creating a sustainable and lagoon-friendly Florida oasis.

The City of Melbourne and its Beautification and Energy Efficiency Board visited the Center in late September to present the city’s Diamond Gems Award.

Accepting were Ken Lindeman, professor and director of Florida Tech’s sustainability program, and Troy Nguyen, associate professor and a leader of the zero-energy efforts that made the building the most efficient on campus.

“The landscape now features 20 species of native Florida trees, shrubs, and ground cover, all installed by the grounds crew and sustainability program students during the pandemic,” Lindeman said.

The native species were purchased with a Collins Aerospace Community Grant. They include Jamaican Caper, Live Oak, Gumbo Limbo, Swamp Dogwood, and Sunshine Mimosa.

There is no sprinkler system outdoors and no pesticides are used. Two pollinator gardens were created. When needed, only slow-release fertilizer is used during allowed months.

In a short presentation, Lindeman acknowledged the groups, people, and organizations who helped make the Diamond Gems Award possible:

■ Collins Aerospace Community Grants and the Florida Tech Development Office

■ City of Melbourne and BEEB

■ Florida Tech grounds crew and facilities operations

■ Alumni Center Staff and Dr. Nguyen’s team

■ Maple Street Natives—NatScape, which provided landscape design

■ Florida Tech students, including those in the sustainability program

With the clean energy award and now the Gems recognition, “Florida Tech Is doing all the right things to be a leader in the community on sustainability and is a beacon for our community here,” said Randall Parkinson, a research associate professor at FIU and chairman of BEEB. (Florida Tech image)

With the clean energy award and now the Gems recognition, “Florida Tech Is doing all the right things to be a leader in the community on sustainability and is a beacon for our community here,” said Randall Parkinson, a research associate professor at FIU and chairman of BEEB.

The Gems award, developed by Todd Cook in the Melbourne Parks Maintenance Department, was first given last year to the Florida Native Plant Society, Conradina Chapter, for Lagoon Park.

The Diamond Gems Award is the highest category of Gems awards, with Emerald as the base award and Sapphire a step above.

For each, at least three criteria must be met. So the Center achieved nine criteria across the three categories, including the use of Florida native plants, having gutters drain onto pervious surfaces (the gutter drains underground), and using organic mulch.

“The Diamond Award, that’s the heavy lift,” Parkinson said. “You’ve done basically everything that is important.”

The 2022 Home Show is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Take advantage of the highest-rated annual showcase of new, high-end and designer homes. Located throughout Utah Valley, this self-guided tour features the work, design, and craftsmanship of Utah County’s finest builders, subcontractors, developers, and remodelers. It’s also an opportunity for homeowners and enthusiasts to view innovative ideas and the newest trends in home decorating.

Utah Valley Parade of Homes Sponsor: Central Bank (CB) has been serving Utah County for over 130 years and is proud of the history of sustained growth and security. Since the economy began to falter in 2008, CB has relied on their own reserves by not taking any “bailout” or TARP money—evidence that they have remained strong, safe, and secure since 1891. Central Bank (CB) believes the continuing progress is a direct result of dedication to caring for the individual needs of the people and communities served. Prime for Over a Century: On October 17, 1891, Milan Packard (great-great-grandfather of president, Mark Packard) helped establish the Springville Banking Company. The bank gradually expanded until 1924 when the community-focused officers and directors were instrumental in attracting the Columbia Steel Mill to the site between Provo and Springville. From this point, the bank enjoyed steady and substantial growth, and it was one of few banks that did not require Government Debenture Capital during the Great Depression. Progressive and ably managed, Springville Banking Company was the first bank in Utah to qualify for FDIC insurance on deposits.

University Avenue in Provo, Utah, where Central Bank’s Provo Office now resides. The State Bank of Provo was organized in 1902 by 16 men of incredibly diverse backgrounds—sheep farmer, plumber, attorney, you name it—who all wanted to find a safe, stable place to save and borrow money. From its founding, the State Bank of Provo grew steadily and the officers and board members were proud to be part of the bank that knew every customer as a friend. On July 1, 1966, the Springville Banking Company and the State Bank of Provo merged under the new name of Central Bank and Trust. This was not simply a union of the two oldest banks in Utah County, but a consolidation of strength that would provide greater lending power, more financial stability, and superior services. Central Bank opened its doors in Spanish Fork in 1969, followed shortly by offices in the Provo Riverside Plaza in 1971 and Mapleton in 1972. Continued expansion brought offices to Payson in 1980, Orem in 1982, American Fork in 1996, Lehi in 2003, Pleasant Grove in 2008, and Traverse Mountain in 2018. These new facilities demonstrate Central Bank’s commitment to serving Utah County and the people who call it “home.”

Central Bank (CB) is committed to offering all modern banking services and conveniences—mobile banking, online bill pay, advanced technology ATM’s, and online financial management through Money Management—without letting go of the personal, friendly touch. Aside from providing exceptional banking services, Central Bank makes valuable contributions that strengthen our communities. Central Bank (CB) employees spend many hours each year participating in local programs, and the bank donates to many educational and civic organizations throughout Utah County.

Janet Moyer Landscaping, San Francisco, received the California Landscape Contractors Association’s Trophy Award for Small Housing, presented at its annual meeting in mid-November.

The award-winning garden in the Mission District of San Francisco was designed by Joe Couture for clients who want a new look in the back of their Victorian two-unit home. The design maximizes space by using diagonal lines in the fence and patio area to expand the visual feel of the room. By collaborating on the selection of complementary plants, containers, and furniture, designers and homeowners have been able to create a warm, welcoming, and fun environment. Couture and the rest of the JML design team are delighted with the recognition of this prestigious annual competition, which adds to the awards received in previous years.

A villager was fined $ 500 for artificial turf at her home.

The bill sent to Shirley Schwartz of Edgewater Bungalows includes a 10 day fine worth $ 50 for violating the act. The fines will continue to pile up at $ 50 per day.

Earlier this year Schwartz appeared before the 6th Community Development District Supervisory Board in a public hearing to save the artificial turf grass she was using without the blessing of the Architectural Review Committee. The CDD 6 board voted 5-0 and ordered her to remove the artificial turf and replace it with turf.

A homeowner at Edgewater Bungalows was looking for a policy change to allow this artificial turf in her home.

Schwartz’s house at 1139 Edgewater Lane has become a popular attraction due to the public relations work surrounding the artificial turf. People stopped by to compliment Schwartz’s artificial turf grass, which cost $ 4,000 to install.

The ARC also turned down Schwartz’s backup plan, dumping white gravel. She was told to take out the artificial turf and replace it with grass. She pointed to other houses in the Edgewater Bungalows and near Creekside Landing, where homeowners were allowed to lay stones. She said it seemed like her refusal from Stein was a “punishment”.

She also tried to convince the ARC that the lawn could be used as a putting green.
