A man was shot and killed in Oakton last night following an apparent fight with a homeowner that led the latter to retrieve a gun, police say.
The Fairfax County Police Department is currently investigating the fatal shooting at the 11400 block of Waples Mill Road as a self-defense case, Second Lt. James Curry told media yesterday. Preliminarily, there’s no indication that the two men involved in the incident knew each other, he said.
Officers were called to a reported shooting in the relatively secluded residential neighborhood just after 6 pm
Based on an initial investigation, police believe the homeowner was outside on his property when the man approached and they got into an altercation that became physical, leading the resident to retreat into his house.
“He retrieved a firearm from inside the home, and at some point, the man made entry into the home with an object that appears to be a large landscaping rock,” Curry said. “The homeowner then fired and shot the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The homeowner was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that appeared to have come from the assault, though exactly where the assault occurred and whether the rock was used as a weapon is still under investigation.
His wife and two children were in the house at the time of the shooting, along with another adult who’s unrelated but also a resident of that home, according to the police. They weren’t injured.
Curry said police had received a call for service earlier in the day when “a man was seen in the area,” but the responding officers didn’t find the man.
As of 8:30 pm yesterday, police were still working to identify the man who was killed and determine the details of the circumstances that led to the shooting, including why he was in the neighborhood and whether he entered the home by force or through an unlocked door.
“As we can interview more folks, review the surveillance footage, we can get a better understanding of what happened outside, but there was an assault that occurred outside on the property that led the homeowner to retreat back into the home that led to our fatal shooting here,” Curry said.

]]>Anyone spot a missing company vehicle? Police say a New York state woman lead officials on a chase that covered both sides of the Thruway Sunday afternoon. The pursuit would lead through multiple counties, and eventually involve authorities using a tire deflation device to stop the truck, that had been allegedly stolen from a local landscaping company the day before.
New York State police said in a press release that they received multiple calls Sunday of a truck driving erratically on eastbound I-90. When Troopers tried to stop the truck the driver failed to comply and the chase was on. However, officials would temporarily call off the pursuit when the truck left the Thruway at Exit 34 in Canastota in Madison County.

Only two hours later, the same truck was reported back on the Thruway, this time traveling erratically westbound. This lead to the second pursuit of the day involving the same vehicle, and this time offcials were able to stop the truck with the deflation device in the town of Henrietta in Monroe County,
Police said they took a 27-year-old female, who was allegedly driving the stolen truck, into custody and have charged her with multiple crimes. State Police contacted a landscaping company which owned the vehicle, who confirmed the truck was seen on video surveillance being stolen Saturday.
A trip from Florida to New York back in March 2021 ended up costing a New York state man. Police say the 25-year-old man rented a U-Haul to drive to New York, but then never returned it. Apparently, this man had a master plan though to prevent getting caught. Officials say he spray painted the truck all black.

If you’ve ever seen a poorly spray painted vehicle it’s quite a sight. Syracuse.com says the Bossvale, NY man had been hiding the creepy looking painted truck, in an attempt to elude authorities. But his luck ended when the truck was discovered by police in Vienna, NY during a burglary investigation.
Police say that upon discovery, the man had also removed the U-Haul’s catalytic converter at some point. Catalytic converter thefts have skyrocketed in recent times, as the stolen parts can be resold on the black market for big bucks.

]]>DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Delray Beach police are investigating after a bicyclist was struck by a truck Wednesday morning.
The collision was reported at around 11:30 am and occurred at the intersection of Linton Boulevard and Federal Highway.
One frequent biker, Tracy Mullane, said she stopped biking at this intersection after numerous near-miss experiences. She said this morning’s accident is a prime example of why the city should have bike lanes at every intersection.
“Well it’s a very dangerous intersection. The problem is that a lot of people are on their phones, they’re approaching the intersection looking down, they aren’t looking at the cyclists who are right there.”
Police and crime scene investigators responded to the scene where a mangled bicycle could be seen underneath a city of Delray Beach truck.
“I wasn’t expecting to see this,” said resident Marcia Clayman. “It’s heartbreaking to see there is actually a bicycle under that landscaping truck.”
The westbound lanes of Linton Boulevard were shut down from Federal Highway to Old Dixie Highway for at least three hours while police conducted their investigation.
The city of Delray Beach has since released this statement:
The cyclist was transported by Delray Beach Fire Rescue to a local area hospital. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones.
