Dear James: We bought a lot with many trees for our new house. What precautions should our contractor take so trees near the house are not damaged during construction?—Diane K.
Dear Diane: Obviously, some of the trees will have to be removed to create open space for your house. If you plan to use the energy conservation advantages of a wooded lot, pay attention to the types of trees and the shade they provide when locating your house on the lot.
A naturally wooded lot is very attractive, and you definitely want to cause as little tree damage as possible. After working all day while trying to take care of a family yourself, the serenity of sitting quietly in a wooden backyard is often just what the doctor ordered to keep your sanity.
Damage during construction to trees is not generally apparent for a year or two after it has occurred, so it may be difficult to determine if the contractor caused it or not. For trees near your house, you can easily spend $1,000 to have a dead or weakened one taken down. You will also lose a quiet spot to relax, and the resale value of your house may also be diminished.
Before you begin constructions, it would be a good idea to hire a professional tree consultant (arborist) to meet with you and your contractor. Various species of trees are susceptible to various types of damage. During the landscaping inspection and meeting, you can determine the best paths for heavy equipment to follow and where not to clean and rinse off the equipment at the end of each workday.
It might also be a good idea to include a clause in your construction contract to cover damage to trees that is not apparent immediately. After meeting with the arborist, you will have an idea of which trees will be most susceptible to damage and what type of damage may result from the construction project.
Assuming a bulldozer does not crash directly into a tree, hidden damage to trees most often results from cutting roots when trenching, compacting the soil with heavy equipment and chemicals getting into the ground from washing the equipment or scrap materials that get buried.
Different trees have different root patterns, and some can sustain quite a lot of root damage and still survive. Maples have a shallow root pattern that is near the surface. These can easily be cut by shallow trenches. Oaks can sustain up to 40% root damage, so run trenches near them if needed. Beech trees can survive only minimal root damage, so avoid them.
Heavy equipment will compact the soil. This squeezes out many of the air pockets, which stresses the root system. These tiny air pockets also hold moisture after a rain. Have your arborist mark acceptable paths for the heavy equipment. You can purchase yellow or orange ribbons at most home center stores to use to mark the equipment paths to use.
Construction materials, such as cement and brick mortar, are highly alkaline. This is actually good for some plants (particularly evergreens) but can be harmful to others. Have the workman rinse off their tools and equipment in an area where it will run into a storm drain and not into your yard. If pressure-treated lumber is used, it would be wise to have the scraps removed and not buried.

The owner of a Leicester landscaping company was killed after he was trapped under a small construction vehicle Friday in a garage that housed the business, officials said.
The victim was identified as Robert Stuart Jr., 51, in a statement released by the Worcester district attorney’s office Saturday. His death appears to be a tragic accident, according to Leicester Police Chief Kenneth Antanavica.
Leicester police, fire, and EMS went to 66 King St. for a report of a man trapped under a piece of equipment at about 11:49 am Friday, the statement said.
Stuart was found trapped under a skid steer loader, which is often used for digging. The machinery was stabilized before he was removed, but first responders discovered he had succumbed to his injuries, the district attorney’s office said.
Stuart had been working on a piece of equipment in his garage that houses Evergreen Lawn Maintenance & Landscape Corp., the district attorney’s office said. Stuart owned the business, according to state records.
The garage was on a commercial part of the property and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was also called to the scene, the statement said.
“All of the town of Leicester first responders offered their thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family and friends,” the statement said.
On the company’s website, Stuart wrote that he has owned and operated the company for over 25 years.
“I am driven and dedicated to my work and have a strong desire to continue to learn and grow with each new endeavor,” he wrote.
The company has worked on numerous commercial and residential projects, including some with the Worcester Housing Authority and the Worcester Parks Department, according to the website.
The incident remains under investigation.

]]>The Town Council is expected to give final approval Thursday to an amended ordinance that places additional restrictions on construction and landscaping work on the island, with some exceptions.
During their meeting at Town Hall, council members will vote on second reading to approve an amended ordinance that sets limits on dates and hours for construction and landscaping work during the peak season, which the town defines as the Monday preceding Thanksgiving through April 30.
The measure was approved unanimously last month on first reading.

As part of the amended ordinance, construction work cannot begin until 8 am and must be completed by 5 pm during peak season, except for Saturdays, Sundays, observed town holidays, and the days before and after Thanksgiving, when it is prohibited.
The ordinance also prohibits lawn maintenance activity on Saturdays, Sundays and observed town holidays during the peak season. But it allows it on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday following Thanksgiving between 9 am and 5 pm
Work performed between 1 pm and 5 pm on the Friday after Thanksgiving must be quiet in nature, meaning no gas or electric-powered lawn maintenance equipment or leaf blowers can be used.
The lawn maintenance exceptions were made after the landscaping industry expressed concerns about the limited amount of time available for lawn activity during the week of Thanksgiving.
In March, the council passed an ordinance on first reading that banned landscaping on the day after Thanksgiving. It also prohibited construction and landscaping on weekday observation dates for holidays that fall on a weekend, and limited construction and landscaping work on the day before Thanksgiving.
Palm Beach: Town Council moves to reduce property tax rate for upcoming fiscal year
Council members said the additional restrictions were needed because of the substantial volume of vehicular traffic within the town during the holidays last year. However, the ordinance never came before the council for a final vote because of intense backlash from landscaping companies.
“The landscape industry objected to the limits, stating that this would limit their ability to provide landscaping for their clients before and after the holiday,” Town Manager Kirk Blouin said.
Also Thursday, the council will:
• Hear presentations on the town-wide undergrounding project and Phipps Ocean Park redesign.
• Vote on an ordinance that would amend the General Fund, Par 3 Golf Course and Building Fund budgets for fiscal year 2022.
• Hear presentations and make appointments to the Investment Advisory Committee and Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Town Council meeting was moved from Tuesday to Thursday because of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. No public meetings will be held Tuesday.
Council members will meet at 9:30 am at Town Hall. Members of the public can participate in person or follow the meeting virtually via Zoom Webinar. Those wishing to make public comments virtually can access the Zoom link on the town’s Meeting Audio page.
On Wednesday, the council also will host its monthly development review meeting at 9:30 am It will be preceded at 9 am by a joint meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission and the mayor, Danielle Moore, and Town Council.
Both meetings will be held in person and via Zoom. Those wishing to make public comments virtually can access the Zoom link on the Meeting Audio page.

New restrictions include: the elimination of construction hours on Saturdays during the peak season; a requirement that workers no longer be allowed to arrive to construction sites prior to 7:30 am on weekdays and 8:30 am on Saturdays; and limits quiet indoor construction, which will be permitted only during the summer months, along with quiet lawn maintenance and tree trimming.

]]>We’re back in the Magic Kingdom in Tomorrowland to observe more updates to TRON Lightcycle / Run as well as Tomorrowland Light & Power Co., which remains closed for the time being.
The walkways continue to get carved out while the construction equipment remains in the area.
The area is looking flatter with concrete soon to come.
The planters outside of the attraction are filled with dirt and the construction equipment has shifted off to the sides.
Peeking into the other side of the concrete wall, we can see workers and more construction moving along to hopefully start concrete on the ground.
Multiple scissor lifts can be spotted inside, but only one was in use.
New landscaping is outlining the Walt Disney World Railroad’s new path.
Trees along the sides of the train tracks have been planted.

It’s possible this could be a connection from TRON Lightcycle / Run to the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co., which is also closed and undergoing refurbishment.
Some tarps have come down since our last view of Tomorrowland Light & Power Co.
The Perm-A-Barrier wrapping is still in place.
We spotted a light on inside the locker area of TRON Lightcycle / Run. The pattern of the fixture looks hexagonal and futuristic.
We also caught more testing of the carts, both weighted and without weight.

]]>UZBEKISTAN, August 24 – President becomes acquainted with construction and landscaping activities in Samarkand
The possibility of holding high-level events and international summits is one of the indicators of the country’s development. As a result of the integrated development of regions, such large-scale events are taking place in recent years not only in the capital, but also in other cities.
Several international events will be held in Samarkand in the coming months. Large-scale activity is being carried out to hold these events at a high level.
The head of the state inspected this process during a trip to the region. There are many buildings of the late XIX – early XX centuries in the city of Samarkand. It is planned to create museums dedicated to interethnic friendship and cooperation with foreign countries in such historical buildings on Alisher Navoi and Shokhrukh streets.
The President approved these plans and gave instructions on the substantial enrichment of museums, reflecting in them close ties with partner countries.
On August 23, the opening of the Great Silk Road International Tourist Center took place in Samarkand district. This complex will host major international events. The Head of the State got acquainted with conditions created in the Congress Hall and hotels of the center.
There are two five star and six four star hotels here. The total area of the Congress Hall is about 6 thousand square meters. It can accommodate 3.5 thousand people. A situation center has also been created here for effective coordination of work during conferences.
The President gave recommendations on improving the conditions for the stay of foreign delegations and holding bilateral meetings.
Thereupon, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev completed his trip to Samarkand region and returned to Tashkent.
