The Pottawatomie Garden Club held its fall luncheon on Monday, Oct. 24

This is the last meeting for the garden club in 2022.

Each year at the fall luncheon, the garden club presents the Landscape Commendation to a local business.

This year, Carriage Oaks, a senior living residence in St Charles, received the award.

In June, Joanne Hoube, a past president of the Pottawatomie Garden Club, invited the Community Outreach Committee to view the gardens surrounding Carriage Oaks where she is a resident.

She introduced them to Nancy McNamara who gave the committee a tour. McNamara is responsible for developing the gardens surrounding the building.

The gardens include perennials, many of them started from seed, as well as cut flower, vegetable and herb gardens. They are surrounded by shrubs and trees.

Volunteers from Carriage Oaks maintain the gardens.

For information, visit www.pottagardenclub.org or www.facebook.com/pottagardenclub.

The club meets on the fourth Monday of the month from March to October. Since 1928, garden club members have made St. Charles a more beautiful community. They plant flowers on the Main Street and Illinois bridges, and around the Municipal building each spring and fall.

The club also hosts a garden walk fundraiser; next year’s walk, showcases private home gardens in St. Charles, will be June 24. The club honors past members with the Memorial Tree Program. The club also awards annual scholarships to horticulture students and provides support to gardening and environmental projects in the community.

TWU Denton and Dallas campuses have been given the Honor Award from the Professional Grounds Management Society as a recognition for their landscaping work this year.

The Professional Grounds Management Society is an organization that is based in the United States that specializes in the landscaping of universities, colleges, cities and parks. The organization provides a space where their members can meet at conferences and talk about maintaining their own landscapes.

“I think it’s very deserving,” TWU landscape manager Roberto Trevino said. “I’m very proud of what the staff does [and] the upkeep of the campus itself. Any student that comes to see the university, that’s one of the first things they’re going to see, and so we want to make a good first impression.”

TWU landscape supervisor Marty Looper started working for the university in 1997 as a groundskeeper. During that time, he mowed the grass and later started maintaining the university’s greenhouse.

“[TWU] started doing more perennial beds and not as many flower beds, which personally I missed, because I liked the difference in color,” Looper said. “I think the standards haven’t changed much [and] I think we hold ourselves to a pretty high standard.”

TWU assistant landscape supervisor Randy Rogers works directly with Trevino and Looper and helps them both maintain the landscape of the campus by using rake manuals to a weed mower.

“My favourite [landscape] is the athletic fields,” Rogers said. “There’s so much to pick from, [and] most people don’t get to see my most favorite one. I get to do more of a native landscape at the Chancellor’s house, so not a lot of people get to see that.”

The Green Star Award means a great deal of importance to everyone on the TWU landscaping services, and everyone on the staff is extremely grateful to receive this award, they said.

“[This award] recognizes the hard work that [we] do throughout the year [and] recognizes the whole university,” Trevino said. “The weather that we have to deal with, the weather conditions, [from] heat to cold, Mother Nature itself, and I’m really proud of what we do here and I love the challenges that we have here.”

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Folliard Alumni Center at Florida Tech, already honored for its zero-energy design inside, has been recognized for its outside where native landscaping and a host of eco-friendly practices are creating a sustainable and lagoon-friendly Florida oasis.

The City of Melbourne and its Beautification and Energy Efficiency Board visited the Center in late September to present the city’s Diamond Gems Award.

Accepting were Ken Lindeman, professor and director of Florida Tech’s sustainability program, and Troy Nguyen, associate professor and a leader of the zero-energy efforts that made the building the most efficient on campus.

“The landscape now features 20 species of native Florida trees, shrubs, and ground cover, all installed by the grounds crew and sustainability program students during the pandemic,” Lindeman said.

The native species were purchased with a Collins Aerospace Community Grant. They include Jamaican Caper, Live Oak, Gumbo Limbo, Swamp Dogwood, and Sunshine Mimosa.

There is no sprinkler system outdoors and no pesticides are used. Two pollinator gardens were created. When needed, only slow-release fertilizer is used during allowed months.

In a short presentation, Lindeman acknowledged the groups, people, and organizations who helped make the Diamond Gems Award possible:

■ Collins Aerospace Community Grants and the Florida Tech Development Office

■ City of Melbourne and BEEB

■ Florida Tech grounds crew and facilities operations

■ Alumni Center Staff and Dr. Nguyen’s team

■ Maple Street Natives—NatScape, which provided landscape design

■ Florida Tech students, including those in the sustainability program

With the clean energy award and now the Gems recognition, “Florida Tech Is doing all the right things to be a leader in the community on sustainability and is a beacon for our community here,” said Randall Parkinson, a research associate professor at FIU and chairman of BEEB. (Florida Tech image)

With the clean energy award and now the Gems recognition, “Florida Tech Is doing all the right things to be a leader in the community on sustainability and is a beacon for our community here,” said Randall Parkinson, a research associate professor at FIU and chairman of BEEB.

The Gems award, developed by Todd Cook in the Melbourne Parks Maintenance Department, was first given last year to the Florida Native Plant Society, Conradina Chapter, for Lagoon Park.

The Diamond Gems Award is the highest category of Gems awards, with Emerald as the base award and Sapphire a step above.

For each, at least three criteria must be met. So the Center achieved nine criteria across the three categories, including the use of Florida native plants, having gutters drain onto pervious surfaces (the gutter drains underground), and using organic mulch.

“The Diamond Award, that’s the heavy lift,” Parkinson said. “You’ve done basically everything that is important.”

The 2022 Home Show is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Take advantage of the highest-rated annual showcase of new, high-end and designer homes. Located throughout Utah Valley, this self-guided tour features the work, design, and craftsmanship of Utah County’s finest builders, subcontractors, developers, and remodelers. It’s also an opportunity for homeowners and enthusiasts to view innovative ideas and the newest trends in home decorating.

Utah Valley Parade of Homes Sponsor: Central Bank (CB) has been serving Utah County for over 130 years and is proud of the history of sustained growth and security. Since the economy began to falter in 2008, CB has relied on their own reserves by not taking any “bailout” or TARP money—evidence that they have remained strong, safe, and secure since 1891. Central Bank (CB) believes the continuing progress is a direct result of dedication to caring for the individual needs of the people and communities served. Prime for Over a Century: On October 17, 1891, Milan Packard (great-great-grandfather of president, Mark Packard) helped establish the Springville Banking Company. The bank gradually expanded until 1924 when the community-focused officers and directors were instrumental in attracting the Columbia Steel Mill to the site between Provo and Springville. From this point, the bank enjoyed steady and substantial growth, and it was one of few banks that did not require Government Debenture Capital during the Great Depression. Progressive and ably managed, Springville Banking Company was the first bank in Utah to qualify for FDIC insurance on deposits.

University Avenue in Provo, Utah, where Central Bank’s Provo Office now resides. The State Bank of Provo was organized in 1902 by 16 men of incredibly diverse backgrounds—sheep farmer, plumber, attorney, you name it—who all wanted to find a safe, stable place to save and borrow money. From its founding, the State Bank of Provo grew steadily and the officers and board members were proud to be part of the bank that knew every customer as a friend. On July 1, 1966, the Springville Banking Company and the State Bank of Provo merged under the new name of Central Bank and Trust. This was not simply a union of the two oldest banks in Utah County, but a consolidation of strength that would provide greater lending power, more financial stability, and superior services. Central Bank opened its doors in Spanish Fork in 1969, followed shortly by offices in the Provo Riverside Plaza in 1971 and Mapleton in 1972. Continued expansion brought offices to Payson in 1980, Orem in 1982, American Fork in 1996, Lehi in 2003, Pleasant Grove in 2008, and Traverse Mountain in 2018. These new facilities demonstrate Central Bank’s commitment to serving Utah County and the people who call it “home.”

Central Bank (CB) is committed to offering all modern banking services and conveniences—mobile banking, online bill pay, advanced technology ATM’s, and online financial management through Money Management—without letting go of the personal, friendly touch. Aside from providing exceptional banking services, Central Bank makes valuable contributions that strengthen our communities. Central Bank (CB) employees spend many hours each year participating in local programs, and the bank donates to many educational and civic organizations throughout Utah County.

A residential project on Rugby St in Christchurch has achieved success in the 2022 Landscapes of Distinction Awards.

Nationally, 132 projects were entered into the awards held by Registered Master Landscapes. The awards celebrated the quality craftsmanship and expertise of the best landscapers in New Zealand.

The winning projects represented the top echelon of landscape design and construction in the country.

Landscaping business, Onlandscapes, was behind the Rugby St design. Their work won the 2022 people’s choice award.

More than 5000 people voted for the award, which was open to the public.

The Rugby St project was designed for empty nesters and created with order, privacy and serenity at the top of the wish list.

“They wanted a full makeover, leaving only the existing Maple tree and perimeter hedging,” Ollie Newman, of Onlandscapes, said.

“It was their preference for it to be simple and structured so they could enjoy the outlook both during the day and night. It was a privilege to construct this project, and an honor to work with such outstanding clients.”

Chief Executive of Registered Master Landscapes, Janine Scott, congratulated all the winners and said there was a 50 per cent increase in the number of entrants this year.

“This represents a major step forward,” she said.

“The landscape industry is going from strength to strength, with so much young talent entering the industry and some extraordinary projects being undertaken by businesses throughout New Zealand.”

A distinctly Lake Wakatipu landscape, which embraces native planting and supports local wildlife, has won the supreme award at the New Zealand Landscapes of Distinction Awards.

The awards were handed out in Auckland on Saturday night and the garden on a Mt Creighton property won the top award.

The garden was created by Green Therapy, a Christchurch design and landscaping business.

The sustainable project includes 98% native planting and was titled “Bob’s Cove Retreat”. It was praised by the judging panel as a harmonious space alongside Lake Wakatipu, with a strong connection and contribution to the wider environment.

“It is perched on a sloping site, with many soil types, shifting water courses and is subject to both animal and plant pest species. The project embodies strong environmental practices such as eco-sourcing, pest control, reuse of on-site resources, water management and client education,” the judges said.

“Many of the natives planted on the site are eco-sourced seeds from the local area, mulch was sourced from locally wind-felled trees and cut-down exotic species were left on site to rot away.

“During the development process, the client has become an eco-warrior, with a great desire to continue the pest weed clean-up on the adjoining Te Papa Atawhai (Department of Conservation) land. The owner has become so invested in the garden and its connection to the wider landscape around it that he is now committed to clearing many exotic weeds from the surrounding Doc land and river edges.”

Green Therapy owner Bryce Coulter said Bob’s Cove Retreat was a unique project due to the extreme climate conditions so hardiness and plant species selection were critical to success.

Arrowtown landscaping business Kate Campbell Gardens also won one of the elite New Zealand Landscapes of Distinction Awards for her work on The Elms, Lake Hayes Residences.

The project won the premier award for garden management/maintenance and a gold medal in the residential project garden management/maintenance for properties of more than 400sqm.

The Elms’ gardens, which were designed by Suzanne Turley, are on a steep north-facing slope that has uninterrupted views of Lake Hayes and the mountains beyond. The gardens are formed around three apartments. The gardens sympathetically complement a historic Ulmus glabra — a horizontal elm in the formal common entrance with layers of evergreen hedging, back planted with shrubs and additional trees.

More than 130 projects from around the country were entered into the Landscapes of Distinction Awards. Award-winning projects represent the top echelon of landscaping design and construction in the country.

Entries were 50% up on last year.

Other Otago businesses to win awards were: Design + Garden Landscapes, Diva Landscapes, Green Therapy, Kate Campbell Gardens, Lakes Landscapes, Natural Habitats and Neville Stewart Landscaping.
