The Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Dr. John Delano, to talk about the old stone walls of New York and New England. The 400,000 km long stone walls in this region are a permanent testament to the work ethic of subsistence farmers from the 17th to 19th centuries. When land in the Midwest became available for settlement in the mid-19th century, many of these farmers emigrated to work the flat, fertile and stone-free land. The abandoned homesteads were soon recaptured from the woods. Stone walls, stone foundations and family cemeteries are often distinctive features of New England forests. These long-forgotten features and the families who created them are discussed using old survey reports, maps, LiDAR images, and John Delano’s personal reports.
