City officials and volunteers kick off day one of volunteer landscaping project at Portage Manor

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Day one of the landscaping project at Portage Manor kicked off on Thursday with city officials and volunteer volunteers out mowing and weeding.

Due to a staffing shortage, Portage Manor has had one worker that handles all outdoor and indoor maintenance on the ten-acre property.

Local leaders are asking for volunteers to give time to help with the upkeep of the lawn.

“If you have an hour a week, that’s cool,” said St. Joseph County Commissioner Derek Dieter. “Just let me know so we can hook you up with an edger, weed eater, or whatever and come out and do that.”

Individuals interested in volunteering with the upkeep of Portage manor should contact Derek Dieter at ddieter@sjcindiana.com
