Artificial turf has become a hot trend in residential areas
A lush, beautiful lawn in front of the house and a beautiful garden for entertainment: what could be better?
While it used to require careful maintenance and landscaping, today there is more than one way to accomplish this goal. And – for those who want to avoid frequent mowing and watering – artificial turf is the hottest option in town.
Tony Carranza, owner of Always Green Synthetic Lawns based in Helotes and the San Antonio area, knows what customers want – and artificial turf has grown in popularity in recent years.
“We’re so busy and it’s a wonderful product,” he said. “People are fed up with dealing with dead grass and muddy backyards and just want to have a maintenance-free garden.”
However, installation is labor intensive – a typical project can take 4 to 10 days, Carranza added.
However, the technology for making artificial turf has developed dramatically in recent years.
“The turf we installed 15 years ago is nothing like what we have now,” said Carranza. “It looks very realistic and feels like natural grass.”
For those looking to achieve a specific look, artificial turf is available that emulates different types of grass like Zoysia and St. Augustine, he added.
“The grasses are multi-colored, with a mix of colors including a little brown to make them look as natural as possible,” said Carranza.
One of the main reasons people use artificial turf for their dorm is because it is easier to maintain.
“It’s easier to wait without having to mow or water the front,” he added.
And for those who own pets, a huge benefit is that animals don’t chase mud in or out of the home, making it an ideal option for pet owners.
One of the biggest trends today is installing artificial turf for backyard living spaces.
“Most of our projects are backyards, although we also have a lot of front gardens,” noted Carranza. “People want to enjoy their garden, and it’s an extension of their house, so they want to invest in their garden and play in it and hang out – not an ugly looking garden made up of weeds and mud.”
Given the social distancing and the fact that people stay close to their homes during the time of COVID-19, many have tried to upgrade their lawns by installing artificial turf to create a more peaceful and comfortable living area for families, children and pets to accomplish.
While artificial turf can be costly to install upfront – prices typically range from $ 7 to $ 10 per square foot – it’s important that consumers consider this an investment.
“With all the time you save mowing, fertilizing, cutting, watering and all that, it will pay for itself in five to ten years – and you’ll enjoy a maintenance-free lawn,” said Carranza.
And for people on a budget, money can be saved by limiting the space required by installing stones or gravel on unused grassy areas and installing only artificial turf in high-traffic areas.
One thing is certain, however: artificial turf makes for a nice living area in the backyard.
“People want very nice grass to play on and play cornhole, ring toss, bocce – and lots of outdoor activities, you have to have really nice grass to play those games,” said Carranza. “We also see people building putting greens [in their backyards] and place shuffleboard courts and artificial turf around the shuffleboard courts. “
And when it comes to front gardens, aesthetics are just as important – and artificial turf creates a wonderful first impression.
“It’s’ instant grass growth,” “Carranza said. “You drive up the driveway to your front door and you have beautiful green grass year after year and you never have to worry about mowing your lawn.”
At Always Green Synthetic Lawns, artificial turf has incredible drainage rates that prevent water from building up on the grass surface, thereby preventing mold or mildew from growing.
